Flowers are amongst the most fragile things which we can think of. Flowers are typically regarded as passive, decorative items. In fact, the term wallflower is used to describe a person who actively avoids being in the limelight.

This has always struck me as curious, because flowers are anything but passive and indifferent. They are the part of plants responsible for reproduction, to ensure continuity of the organism’s genes. To achieve that end, flowers are the parts of the plant go about achieving their objectives by being bold and daring to stand out.

Garang is a Malay word which has a multitude of meanings and connotations. It is commonly used as “fierce”, but the usage of the term also encompasses other associations such as courageous, and I use it as ‘bold’ and ‘fearless’ for this series.

Flowers are bold representations of life, and in this series I’ve used paint strokes to bring out the sense of vitality. I hope that I have managed to bring out the audacity of flowers, their boldness to stand out from the crowd of green/brown leaves and stems.
